A wonderful array of iconic UK landmark buildings lit up in green throughout October to mark Liver Cancer Awareness Month, as part of our Light Up For Liver campaign.
From as far north as Aberdeen and stretching as all the way south to Eastbourne, and reaching across the Irish sea to the Isle of Man, over 30 landmarks across 21 towns and cities, including bridges, towers, theatres, monuments and town halls shone a green light on liver cancer, to support and send a message of solidarity to everyone affected by liver cancer and to improve awareness of a cancer that sees an estimated 6000 new cases every year in the UK. From local community gems, to buildings of national significance like the BT Tower, it was amazing to see the range of landmarks that were illuminated.
We are so grateful to everyone who helped us make this possible, from the wonderfully active volunteers who asked their local landmarks to illuminate in green, to the supportive teams who manage the iconic landmark structures. And we say an extra special thank you to Tara, our incredible volunteer who spent hours tirelessly contacting dozens of organisations around the UK asking for their support to light up in green to shine a light on liver cancer, and to the other brilliant supporters who arranged illuminations with local businesses, landmarks, or their employers.
Pamela Healy, Chief Executive of the British Liver Trust said:
“It was heartwarming to see so many of our great buildings and landmarks illuminated in green to support everyone affected by liver cancer across the UK. We know that increasing numbers of people are being diagnosed with liver cancer, and by shining a green light on so many of our iconic structures, we’re raising awareness of this vastly under-recognised disease, and sending a very visual message of support to those affected. Thank you to everyone who made it happen.”
“Liver cancer is the fastest rising cause of cancer death in the UK but with earlier diagnosis many of these deaths can be prevented.”
